Croydon Fox 04:00
I'm looking for your offspring I need to taste them I lie open-jawed by the wellspring Aching to chase them I’m hiding low in your privet Prove it I snake from your Sunday supplement Into the kennel of your bitch You search for me in dark places Like schoolyards and mirrors I slide into prosaic form To feed your night terrors I am awake when you're not And I'm hot, unlike your unlucky victim Who was mostly unseen Thus unclean My favourite time of day is night Your vestigial vigilantes can’t catch me You’ll need more than shrieking tabloids to trap me Crucify one more of your own While I still hunt alone My favourite time of day is night I’m the witch of the motorway Stalking your familiar You don’t realise how much you love me I’m part of your nature I am as English as Jimmy or Gary Snarling in your headlight beam Just marginally Less Obscene My favourite time of day is night

about

Moral panic is a peculiar business. Kernels of vague information blossoming into fully fledged thickets of horror, shrieking tabloids inciting the masses to arms, pearls clutched at, innocents persecuted, etc, etc.
This kind of thing is often grimly compelling of course, and Strange Flesh were sufficiently compelled by the modern legend of The Croydon Cat Killer that it became the focus of their wonderful single, 'Croydon Fox'.
Written from a satirically anthropomorphic perspective of the urban fox(es) that the 'killer' turned out to be, 'Croydon Fox' explores an after dark face-off between two of the planet's best-loved animals, viewed through the warped lens of a very human media frenzy.
